Aix en Provence


Aix en Provence takes its name from the thermal springs discovered by the Romans in the year 123 before J.C.  It was the Capital of the Provence in the XV century and a very prosperous town with beautiful bourgeois homes and private mansions, ancient fountains and shady streets.
Many painters and writers have been inspired by this charming town: Guigou, Stendhal, Mistral, Zola and Cézanne.  Aix en Provence boasts magnificent architecture exceptionally well preserved and restored.  The Cour Mirabeau, apart from its lively cafés and restaurants, is a beautiful avenue to stroll down while admiring the many private mansions and their beautiful sculptured windows, doors and balconies.  Every summer the International Festival of Lyric Art and Music presents divas and maestros for the public’s delight and the Dance Festival is also Internationally famous.

MONT VENTOUX


Mont Ventoux nicknamed the Giant of Provence is the highest mountain in the Vaucluse reaching 1 912 mètres.  The Tour de France climbs it nearly every year and people have skied down it since the beginning of the 1930’s.  Many hikers and walkers also discover it throughout the summer months.

 

MARSEILLE


Marseille is with its 839 043 habitants, the second town and the first port of France.  The town was built 600 years before J.C. by Greek sailors from Phocée, Asia, hence the nickname of La Cité Phocéenne.    Marseille with its famous Pagnol accent and picturesque old port is a fascinating and colorful town to visit.  Visit the Calanques (creeks) and nearby islands, Les Iles du Frioul with the château d'If (and its legend of the Count of Monte Cristo).  You can taste the famous bouillabaisse (fish soup) in the local restaurants and visit the majestic Notre Dame de la Garde that thrones 162 meters over the sea.  Marseille is also famous for its football team l’Olympique de Marseille.
